Cara Clarkson, MS, LPC-MHSP (she/her)
I appreciate working with individuals who, in one way or another, are afraid of being seen as high maintenance, “too sensitive,” or “too much.” This may look like someone who has found themselves disconnected or unfulfilled in relationships, someone who often feels misunderstood, or someone who is at a standstill due to the impact of anxiety or indecision. I also really enjoy working with individuals who have been previously (or are still!) hesitant towards or suspicious of therapy.
Anxiety and self-judgment can cause us to avoid or numb out, and the avoidance can lead to an increase in the anxiety and self-judgment. I am passionate about working with clients who have been caught in this loop and are feeling on edge about making a change.
My work with clients is grounded in the belief that personal responsibility and self-compassion can coexist. It is my goal to build relationships with clients that foster honest self-reflection while cultivating understanding toward the parts of ourselves that struggle, avoid, or hurt. My approach emphasizes psychological flexibility, values-based action, and learning how to move toward meaningful change without relying on shame or self-criticism.
Just for fun - Here’s a playlist I made of songs that have reminded me of my work with clients.
